Jessie J, Rita Ora and Rihanna are just some of the many female singers currently in the music industry. Each of them are beautiful, powerful and the stereotypical 'pop singers' that you would expect but do you have to be like this to do well in the music industry nowadays?
When you look at people such as Susan Boyle, winner of Britains Got Talent, people expected her to not do well. There was a lot of prejudice against her when she first went on, people thinking that because she was not particularly pretty and was older than the other people on the show she would not be as good as the other contestants, but then when she started singing she blew the audience away! Ant says 'You weren't expecting that, where you?' and this just shows that people are so used to the stereotypical singers that when it comes to so who we assume will be talented or not, we judge the person on their looks than how good they can sing.
We then looked at the types of artists out now and what their album covers would be like. We looked at Beyonce and her 'I am... Sasha Fierce' album and came to many conclusions about what her album cover was trying to portray to an audience. She was presented in the middle of the cover to show power and that she was the most important thing on the screen and they had made sure she was looking straight into the camera to make us think that she had written this album for you. The representation of this artist helps us to make an assumption of what the album is going to be like, even before we have listened to it.
We used this idea of representation when thinking about our own videos we were going to make. We had the genre of rom com and we understood that in order to get across to the audience what our genre was we had to be very stereotypical when looking at what our characters had to be like. We made our main girl, who stereotypically is the geeky and unpopular girl, wear glasses, long skirt and a blazer to portray this idea to the audience.
Overall i think that in todays society beauty is very key to being successful in the music industry but even without it you can make a name for yourself if you have enough talent and toughness in order to get through the many people that will be your critics.
