Opening to Inglorious Basterds - Quentin Tarentino

In our lessons recently we have been looking at movie openings and what makes a good one. One of the aspects of a successful movie opening is the use of enigma which is trying to create mystery and get the audience asking questions about the film. One of the movies that creates enigma in the beginning of their film is inglorious bastards by the use of opening credits and a black screen. The film starts by having a black screen with titles in white introducing the director, producer, main characters etc and happy music playing in the background. This music contrasts with the black background and plainness of the opening but also helps us to identify the period in which the film is going to be set. It then carries on in this way for about a minute until it goes to a plain black screen for approx 10 secs. This flash of black before the action starts helps to inscrease the enigma in the clip and builds suspense as we currently don't know what is going to happen and the short delay leaves us wanting more. In this clip, the use of enigma is very important and helps to make this opening interesting and successful.
