'The use of the imagination or original ideas, esp. in the production of an artistic work.'
In class today, we looked at the the word CREATIVITY. Firstly I would like to state that I in no way considered myself to be creative at all when I entered the classroom that morning, but as the lesson went on I started to realise that I may be more creative than I first thought.
When I first thought of the word creative the words that sprang to my mind were unique, imaginative and different; all words that I believed were the total opposite to me. We talked about it as a class and I started to think that maybe the word isn't as easy to define as I first thought. When I thought about it I realised that being creative was entirely affected by the things around you, the people you grow up with and the things you did as a child. For example we decided that children that were read to and given crayons to play with whilst little would most probably be more creative than those who were given nothing. This was an interesting point and when I looked further into the word, I started to realise that my first impression of the word was wrong. Thinking about it the word unique and different (and the word original which is used in the google definition of creativity above) were bad words to use as can anything really be original anymore? Anyway that's a whole other story!
I then thought that being creative must be something to do with the way you think. In order to be a creative person, it must use lots of your imagination and the right side of your brain. I also thought that creativity is more about the process you go on to get something, rather than the actual final product itself. This means that if you take a creative route to get somewhere, instead of doing the 'normal', you are more likely to eventually produce a more creative product but when you take the same process as everyone else, it is hard to create a creative product for yourself.
However I do also think it is very much about personal opinions. Things like abstract art is a prime example of this idea as some people might see a piece of artwork as very creative but then others see it as rubbish!
So overall I came to the conclusion that, to me: creativity is a process that uses both your imagination and your environment to make something interesting, however personal opinions can affect everybodies views on the creativity of a piece.
