Why Choose Media Studies?
At the end of year 11 when, despite only being 16, I had to seriously start to think about what I wanted to do with my life career wise, I had to make some difficult desicions as to the right A-Levels to take the next year. With the wide variety of subjects I had to choose from and the vast aray of career paths I could have gone down, I came to the conclusion that I wanted to do something in Journalism and the Media. So, as you would expect, Media was one of the subjects I looked at first. I was highly interested in this subject from the beginning, being that it included skills that would be vital further down the line in any possible careers I wished to undertake but also because it was something that I knew very little about. This thought intrigued me. The fact that I had never done it before in KS3 could have been quite a daunting aspect but for me made it seem like I was starting a fresh and this thought really excited me!
So the next thing I decided to do was research the subject. I used search engines such as google to try and find out the sort of things that you did in Media Studies to really start to see if this was something that I wanted to do. I saw that you used cameras and recording devices, alongside editing software on the computers and I really liked the idea of working in groups rather than being purely individual work.
All of this stuff then got me thinking as to whether people actually took the course seriously. Many people I know, especially people of the older generation, seem to consider this subject a sort of 'Mickey Mouse' subject. An easy subject and something that universities didn't accept. However, on thourghly researching this subject it said nowhere that they do not take this as a qualified and acceptable A-Level. I mean so far I had no drawbacks!
Another reason I choose to take Media is the impact that the media has on all of our everyday lives. It controls nearly everything we do, be it through the radio, television or music. It is clearly becoming one of the most important things in everyone's lives and is ever changing, making it a subject that is vital to the society we live in.
But one of the main reasons, despite the idea of going into the media career when I was older, was that the course just looked genuinly fun! After choosing to take History, English Literature and Theatre Studies which all included lots of essay writing and memorising certain information, I needed something that would let out my creative side and allowed for me to have a break from all the constant writing I was doing for other subjects. Not trying to say that the subject is easy, from everything I have heard it sounds far from it, but it seemed like a way in which I could let out some of my creative juices! Overall I would urge anyone to take this subject and I think the question should no longer be 'Why Choose Media Studies?' but more 'Why NOT Choose Media Studies?!'
